Unchecking the filter boxes
of my mouth,
letting go words I hang my soul on.
Hide in shadows so dark
even I can’t see them.
I’ll lie,
if you ask me.
Again and again.
I’ll cut my skin and drain my soul,
lie naked on the floor in silence.
Live mutely in a world of sound,
ignore the knocking.
My skin is a room I never learned
to live in.

  1. My skin is a room I never learned
    to live in.

Wow, those two lines summed up how I felt the whole time that I was actively drinking – it was this exact feeling that I drank to lessen, blunt and escape.

Congratulations on your recovery, Elyse, and on your 6+ months of sobriety… stay strong an tough. It’s hard sometimes, I know it is, but it’s also worth it.

  2. Thank you!
I’m glad those lines stood out to you –it’s great to hear from people who can sympathize with your experiences. That’s been one of the greatest blessings of getting sober and learning to be more honest.
